Includes deeds, land drafts, mortgages, bonds, agreements, and family and legal estate papers (1745-1905); family estate papers (1817-1876) and correspondence (1830-1925); papers of John Watson (1811-1859) including correspondence on Quaker matters; papers of William Watson (1832); papers of George Hart and others (1845-1867); Richard Watson's papers including personal and family correspondence (ca. 1850-1891) which largely consist of letters from his daughter Miriam while she attended Swarthmore College; business, legal and political correspondence (ca. 1845-1891); notes of court cases (1861-1873); receipts, bills, accounts, bonds, agreements, speeches, business proposals and other papers (ca. 1850-1889), estate and guardianship accounts, some by George Hart (1844-1888) for Watson, Hart, and Croasdale families and Samuel Yardley of Philadelphia, Pa.; and lists of war veterans applying for bounties, pay, land warrants, and pensions from the War of 1812 and the Civil War (1855-1867).

Founded by members of Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Swarthmore College was incorporated in 1864 under a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
